What We Do Church -- Community -- Council -- Family --Youth Have you and your family ever watched the telecast of Pope John Paul II midnight Mass from St. Peter's Basilica in Rome on Christmas Eve? Well, the Knights of Columbus is the organization that underwrites the cost of telecasting from the Vatican, and has done so since 1976. Our support covers the costs of uploading the transmission and broadcasting to mission countries. Or perhaps you've seen us standing in front of your local shopping mall or grocery store raising funds for charities that assist mentally retarded and/or handicapped children. Our Order uses an Annual Survey of Fraternal Activity to gather data on the work done by local units. Information collected through the survey includes the amount of money raised and donated by the Knights of Columbus to charities and the number of service hours by volunteer Knights. In 2001, we donated $125 million and gave 59 million service hours. Over the past 10 years, the Knights volunteered more than 400 million hours of service and donated over $1 billion to charity. What we do at the local level is pretty much left up to the Knights in the local community. If we see a problem that we believe we can muster the resources to solve, we attack it. The funds we raise stay at the local level, helping causes we select. The principal areas for the donation of funds and for volunteer involvement are the following categories: Church, Community, Council, Family and Youth.
