Habitat for Humanity Knights of Columbus brothers put their words into action for Habitat for Humanity by joining in with hundreds of other All Saints parishioners to help build Habitat for Humanity house number six.
Habitat
for Humanity is a nonprofit non-denominational Christian ministry dedicated to
“building a decent home in a decent community for God’s people in need”.
Habitat was founded in 1976 and now has over 1,000 affiliates in the US and
around the world.
Habitat
is not a give away program. Each
new homeowner works side-by side with volunteers and sponsors to build their
new home. Homeowners must put in
a minimum of 150 hours of Sweat Equity to qualify for a home. Habitat homes
are sold to new homeowners for $45,000 at 0% interest for 20 years. Mortgage
payments are paid back to Habitat to help fund the building of more homes. Habitat for Humanity gives us hope for a better tomorrow. Can you imagine what a difference we could make if everyone would just give one day of their time and energy to help those who cannot help themselves. I recently read the following that brought volunteering into perspective. “No one person can do everything, but everyone can do something.” I believe that we all have an obligation to help others in need. By working together as partners, we can provide a better life for many. Many people have asked me, why do you work with Habitat. My response is always the same, because I believe we can make a difference and we cannot and must not give up on the inner-city. |
